In April 2026, Montblanc pays an exceptional tribute to Henri Matisse with a new edition of its Masters of Art collection.

Created in collaboration with Maison Matisse, this series of five limited-edition writing instruments celebrates the French master’s artistic universe by translating his works into material, volume, and gesture.

Far more than a collection simply inspired by the artist, this collaboration offers a true three-dimensional reinterpretation of Matisse’s oeuvre. Each writing instrument becomes a miniature sculpture—an object of contemplation where Montblanc’s exceptional craftsmanship meets the visual power of one of the twentieth century’s greatest artists.

From the monumental compositions of the 1910s to his iconic paper cut-outs, Matisse’s work reflects a lifelong pursuit of balance between form, colour, and movement. This quest naturally resonates with Montblanc’s own heritage, whose writing instruments have embodied artisanal excellence since the creation of the Meisterstück in 1924. Together, the two maisons celebrate a shared vision: creation as the pursuit of artistic perfection.

Each piece in the collection explores a defining chapter in Matisse’s creative journey.

The Limited Edition 888 celebrates La Blouse roumaine (1940), a masterpiece created in the early days of the Second World War. Intricately engraved textures evoke the traditional embroidery of the Romanian blouse that Matisse so passionately collected, while black onyx details echo the graphic elegance of this composition, which has come to embody hope and light. Through this piece, the collection pays tribute to Matisse’s enduring fascination with textiles, ornamental patterns, and the decorative arts.

With the Limited Edition 161, Montblanc revisits the memories of Matisse’s 1930 journey to Tahiti—an experience that would profoundly shape his artistic vision. The engraved sterling silver cap evokes the lush tropical landscapes of Polynesia through motifs inspired by Fenêtre à Tahiti, while the cocobolo wood barrel is delicately engraved with patterns drawn from one of the Oceanic textiles in the artist’s personal collection. This creation brings Matisse’s sensory memories vividly to life: radiant light, underwater worlds, and swaying vegetation transformed into timeless, universal motifs.

The Limited Edition 96 pays tribute to La Danse II (1910), one of Matisse’s most revolutionary works. Bronze figures appear to whirl around a vibrant turquoise-blue lacquer, recreating the circular rhythm and primal energy of this iconic dance. Matisse regarded rhythm as the very foundation of his pictorial language, and this edition captures its enduring sense of movement and dynamic tension.

At the pinnacle of the collection, the Limited Edition 8 reinterprets Robe violette et anémones (1937) through an extraordinary work of goldsmithing, combining white gold, enamel, precious gemstones, and diamonds. As in Matisse’s later paintings, decorative motifs proliferate until the boundary between painting and object dissolves. The fountain pen thus becomes a case, a jewel, and a work of art in its own right.
