How are our products manufactured?

Maison Matisse uses the most reputable expertise. All Maison Matisse products are handcrafted. The workshops are mainly located in Europe (France or Italy) and in other parts of the world for specific types of craftsmanship.

Maison Matisse collections are an opportunity to discover amazing stories that are told through authentic design objects made by the best craftsmen.

— Ceramic objects from the La Musique collection

The ceramic pieces in the La Musique collection are cast and unmolded by hand before the first two stages of firing for applying the decoration. The first firing stage transforms the clay into a bisque and the design is applied using a tissue paper perforated by a needle and then stamped with graphite, using the "spolvero" technique. Each piece is then decorated by hand, with the exception of the small dessert plates, which are engraved with the pattern. The second stage of firing sets the colors, before a third stage sets the matte enamel.

This process is the result of fine craftsmanship, which gives these pieces all their richness and reflects their intrinsic value. It leaves the trace of the hand gesture that transforms any design object into a unique piece.

— Objects from the Intérieur aux aubergines collection

For the Intérieur aux Aubergines collection, the tops of the coffee tables have also been made entirely by hand in the same ceramics studio. The pieces are fired a first time, then painted with engobe and fired again to set the color.

Each piece of furniture has a unique structure, entirely made from rattan by the greatest Italian craftsmen, who have been working in the Brianza area since 1889 and are now among the last in Europe. Each piece of furniture, whether sofa, armchair or coffee table, is made from a type of rattan called Manao, in the wild in the tropical jungles of Indonesia. The stalk is cut into lengths of 4 to 10m, dried in an upright position, then selected based on use, color, density, and diameter. To bend them, the stalks are warmed, before being dampened with a cloth to set the curve. Using nails hidden by the binding (rattan ribs), the stalks are then assembled and sanded by hand to ensure that they are soft to the touch. Finally, two coats of varnish are needed: the first is absorbed by the rattan, and the second is used to seal the last remaining loose fibers, which are then sanded by hand. The piece is finished with a matte finish.

The fabrics used for the seats, the folding screen, the wallpaper and cushions, were made from natural yarns by a renowned Venetian factory that dates back to the 18th century.

The two types of lampas have been created using using the Gobelin weaving technique with high-tech looms.

Rugs from Intérieur aux aubergines collection were made by a Milan-based textile company which operates near Kathmandu in the Buddha region of Nepal. Each carpet is hand-knotted by local artisans using Himalayan wool, known for its exceptional durability, and Chinese silk. After being spun by hand, the yarn is washed in purified water and dyed in six colors all by hand, by the Master of Color, using a spray method, before being knotted. A warp made of thousands of cotton strands is first stretched on a vertical loom, while the cross threads serve as the weft to ensure the stability of the rug. The final product is the result of three months of work.

This process is the result of fine craftsmanship, which gives these pieces all their richness and reflects their intrinsic value. It leaves the trace of the hand gesture that transforms any design object into a unique piece.

How do I care for my product?

Maison Matisse recommends washing ceramic objects by hand using mild soap and a non-abrasive sponge, and drying carefully with a lint-free cloth. Not dishwasher-safe.

Rattan pieces should be cleaned with a soft, slightly damp cloth. The use of abrasive products is not recommended.

The seat cushion covers are removable, and professional cleaning is recommended.

Prolonged exposure of the products to direct sunlight may alter the color of the pieces.

If a Maison Matisse piece is damaged, we recommend that you contact customer service at for more information.
