Description

The Italian designer Cristina Celestino has designed an entire decorative universe for Maison Matisse, in which the Colette sofa has become a must-have from the collection.

Designed to play on the contrast between the interior and the exterior, as evoked in Henri Matisse's Intérieur aux Aubergines work, the Colette sofa features an understated and natural rattan structure, whose round shapes render it ultra-modern. The seat cushions combine an organic fabric with a solid block one.
The entire ensemble gives the sofa a unique and striking look, allowing it to adapt to a variety of settings depending on your personal taste.

Presented here in duck green and ochre version, the Colette sofa is also available in a ochre and sky blue tones version.

Arts and materials

Maison Matisse attaches great importance to the materials used and the artisans trusted with creating its pieces. Thus, the Colette sofa's rattan structure was constructed at a specialized site based in Brianza, the historic and highly regarded region of Italy known for its designer furniture production and its craftsmanship being passed down from one generation to the next. The seat fabric has been woven on jacquard looms using natural fibers in a Venetian workshop that dates to the 18th century. Rattan is a natural and durable material that is bent by hand on wooden templates using the traditional steaming method.

Inspiration

With the rattan structure of the Colette sofa and the botanical motif found on the jacquard fabric, we discover the idea of an indoor environment while breathing the fresh air of the external landscape depicted on Henri Matisse's iconic piece, Intérieur aux Aubergines.

Cristina Celestino

For the permanent collection Intérieur aux aubergines, Maison Matisse was inspired by Henri Matisse's eponymous painting from 1911 and collaborated with the Italian designer Cristina Celestino. This choice seemed self-evident. The designer’s world is perfectly adapted to that of the artist’s painting in this particularly decorative canvas where the planes deeply superimpose each other.
