Description

The Potiron armchair is part of the Esquisses collection, inspired by a series of timeless drawings by Henri Matisse from the book "Dessins: Thème et Variation" (1943). Created by the renowned British designer Faye Toogood, this armchair is the perfect combination of comfort and style.

Crafted with the utmost attention to detail, the Potiron armchair is upholstered in a soft-touch curly wool fabric available in three sophisticated colours - off-white, brown and black, each of which adds a touch of elegance to any interior.

The shape of the Potiron armchair recalls the elements of Henri Matisse's still life: a pumpkin, a vase, a pitcher, as well as the presence of a void (detail of the cut-out in the backrest), which symbolises the negative space of the painter's drawing. The curved and subtle lines of the Potiron armchair evoke the essence of the painter's drawings, while offering optimal comfort.

Arts and materials

The Potiron armchair is made by an Italian craftsman expert in seating.

The structure is made of wood and metal.

The upholstery is made of polyurethane foam moulded in moulds made especially for Maison Matisse.

The Bouclette upholstery fabric (white, brown and black) was designed exclusively for the Potiron armchair, also in Italy.

Inspiration

The Potorion armchair is inspired by a work in Chinese black ink on white paper from Henri Matisse's 1943 book "Dessins : Thèmes et Variations". The book presents 16 themes (from A to P), each series of which is considered an independent work of art.

For the Esquisses collection, a specific series has been chosen: the G series. Through his series, Henri Matisse's working methodology appears: reinterpreting the same subject several times with different drawing techniques and using the physical incorporation of the gesture to the point of automation, to achieve, in each drawing, the balance that characterises his work.

With its first objects created in a monochrome palette of black, brown and natural beiges, the Esquisses collection marks a new stage for Maison Matisse. The pure colours of a drawing highlight the essential nature of the motifs, and evoke the fluidity and freedom that Henri Matisse was able to convey through the intuitive gesture of drawing simply with ink on paper.
