Arts and materials

The Double Point earthenware dessert plate was created by one of the oldest family workshops specializing in ceramics, which was founded in Tuscany in 1921. During the manufacturing process, the plate is first cast in a mold before being removed and painted using the desired color slip. The motif is first applied to the biscuit using the ancient spolvero technique, which is the transfer of a design onto the biscuit. The craftsman then traces it by hand using a metal point called a miretta. The plate then undergoes a series of two firings, between which a matte varnish is applied to give the plate a raw finish. The plate is then fired one last time in order to fix the colors and harden the material so that it can stand the test of time.

The characteristic matte black of the Double Point plate, as well as its engraved pattern, is the result of an ancestral know-how and heritage combined with modern techniques. This technical feat provides the object with its unique character. The combination of earthenware and a bright decorative design makes this service organic and sensual.

Inspiration

The Double Point plate's design was inspired by Henri Matisse's 1939 painting La Musique. It is taken from the chair on which the guitar player’s companion is seated

Marta Bakowski

Maison Matisse invited the young designer Marta Bakowski to create its first permanent collection inspired by the painting La Musique (1939). The Franco-Polish designer took the palette of colors and brilliantly reinterpreted the most representative themes of Henri Matisse's work, such as the philodendron leaf, the figure of the woman and music.
