For the limited edition 1869 collection, Maison Matisse wanted the designers to have complete freedom to choose the artisans who would bring their vases to life. The relationship of trust, often forged over several years, has enabled them to translate the essence and character of their designs as faithfully as possible. In a spirit of collaboration, this three-way partnership between Maison Matisse, the designers and their artisans echoes the approach taken by Matisse in his illustrated books and stained-glass windows, resulting in unique pieces.

It was in the mid 1970’s, as a graduate of the Beaux-Arts and owner of his own ceramics workshop, that Alessio Sarri met Matteo Thun, someone passionate about architecture, with whom he would move into the world of design, in producing vases of a new genre: the Rara Avis.
Combining experimentation and the taming of seemingly impossible shapes, Alessio Sarri transformed his atelier into a laboratory and immediately distinguished himself from everyone else. A signature style that favoured his encounter with Ettore Sottsass, taken by the vibrations of the pieces signed Alessio Sarri.
In the early 1980s, Alessio Sarri began his collaboration with the Memphis group. A host of designers whose distinctive lines he skilfully reinterpreted in his own unique way, transforming each piece into a world of sensory experiences. It was his studio chosen by designer Alessandro Mendini and Maison Matisse to produce the three vases – Puro, Sinuoso and Lucente – for the limited edition 1869 collection.
