Out of stock: the Sol serving bowl is the object of a measured production that respects the rhythm of our craftsmen. Painted entirely by hand, its design requires a unique know-how that cannot be shortened. A little patience, it will be back in stock very soon!

The Sol serving bowl is the fruit of the collaboration between Franco-Polish designer Marta Bakowski and Maison Matisse. Entirely hand painted, it is an essential part of the La Musique collection, a set of objects with bright warm colors.

It can be used in many ways: as a centerpiece, a decorative object with strong character, a simple bowl for fruit and vegetable displays, or as a serving dish.
The bowl is suitable for food use, as is all the tableware in this collection.

Arts and materials

The production of the Sol serving bowl has been entrusted to one of the oldest family-run workshops in Italy, located in Tuscany since the early 1920s. Made entirely by hand, it is the result of an ancestral know-how that only a few craftsmen still possess today. Cast and demolded by hand, it is painted and fired twice to ensure optimal color fixation on the biscuit. As for the material, Marta Bakowski selected faïence earthenware. From the great family of ceramics, it is named after the Italian city of Faenza. Worked with for many decades to create a variety of decorative objects, this material responds perfectly to the needs of the designer, which is to give life to colors.

The Sol serving bowl has a particular “trompe l'oeil” aspect. Indeed, when seen from above, the eye is tricked by the richly colored ornamental contours inspired by the color palette of Henri Matisse’s painting La Musique (1939). Once it has worked its magic, we are drawn with surprise to its center, discovering a round, generous heart with a deep red color.

Inspiration

The "La Musique" collection is inspired by Henri Matisse's eponymous painting from 1939 celebrating the painter's love for music. The Sol serving bowl's motif echoes that of the Harmonie large serving bowl, combining the soft curves of the Philodendron leaf with more dynamic graphic shapes.

Thus, the designer wished to work with generous dimensions, playing with shapes such as half spheres and disks in order to celebrate the colors and bring all their meaning to the center of the table.

Marta Bakowski

Maison Matisse invited the young designer Marta Bakowski to create its first permanent collection inspired by the painting La Musique (1939). The Franco-Polish designer took the palette of colors and brilliantly reinterpreted the most representative themes of Henri Matisse's work, such as the philodendron leaf, the figure of the woman and music.
